The Soft Spoken is a participatory video work film about the contradictions of female expression—how women are expected to stay quiet, yet carry the weight of what’s unsaid.

Before filming, participants were invited into intimate conversations about the experience of womanhood. Together, we reflected on silence, suppression, and the emotional labor of being unheard. Then, each woman stepped before the camera to scream.

Filmed in slow-motion, the women scream directly into the lens—yet their voices are stripped away, leaving behind a haunting collage of soundless release. What emerges is a chorus of faces transformed in the act of being fully, vulnerably seen.

The absence of sound invites contemplation. Without the comfort of words, viewers are asked to confront the raw intensity of emotion on screen. Each scream becomes a suspended sculpture—a moment stretched in time, beautiful and unsettling.

The Soft Spoken questions the cultural conditioning that teaches women to temper their voices, their anger, their presence. By capturing the breaking of that conditioning in silence, the film becomes a meditation on visibility, voice, and what it means to take up space.

This participatory process—beginning with honest conversation and culminating in uninhibited expression—reflects a belief that meaningful work begins with trust, care, and collaborative vulnerability.
