THE WHALE-HUNTERS OF PAMILACAN
documentary, 50', early research stage
seeking funding & co-production
The Whale Hunters of Pamilac is a hybrid participatory documentary rooted in community-led storytelling. It is a collaboration between Vietnamese film director Mai Huyen-Chi and Filipino theatre maker Jerrey David Aguilar and the Kasing Sining Theater Collective.
Set mainly in the Philippines, the film explores the ethical and emotional legacies of outlawed traditions through co-created theater and immersive filmmaking.
PROJECT STATUS
We’re in the early development stage of conceptualization and research.

We’re looking for funders, international co-producers, impact partners, and regional collaborators with experience in ethical, community-based storytelling. We’re also seeking funding support to complete the research and production phase in 2026.

This phased approach supports ethical collaboration by allowing time for trust-building, reflection, and co-creation with the community.

LOGLINE
On an island where the tradition of whale hunting persists in the face of an international ban, a hybrid documentary unfolds through theater—co-created with a nearby community facing its own environmental precarity.
Together, they ask: what does it mean to inherit a tradition the world no longer accepts?
