Con Nha Ngheo (CNN) Cinema, roughly translated as CINEMA OF PEASANTS, is a community moving-image program founded by filmmaker Mai Huyền Chi. Built around screenings, talks, workshops, and mentoring activities, CNN promotes the work, practice, and moving-image artists across genres, from fiction and nonfiction narrative films to other non-narrative forms of experimental films and video arts. Through film, CNN explores the issues of gender equality, cultural heritage, history, climate change, and marginalised communities.
Since 2023, we’ve held five events in Vietnam, including one for ethnic children in Quang Nam, and collaborated with overseas collectives to screen Vietnamese films in Melbourne, Phnom Penh, and Toronto.
Run by filmmakers Mai Huyen Chi and Le Ngoc Duy, CNN is part of A Sông, an artist-led collective that uses the arts to educate and strengthen communities.
With its eyes on authentic and accessible filmmaking, CNN aims to nurture a space and community for grassroots, independent filmmaking, one that is free from budget, reputational, aesthetic, and political restraints—at least in the mindset.
