//SYNOPSIS//
50 Years of Forgetting follows Mai Huyen Chi - a Vietnamese filmmaker, as she sets out to trace the life and death of her grandfather, a war hero. What begins as a personal search soon unravels into a quiet reckoning with memory, grief, and the long shadows of conflict.
The film is a journey across the three regions of Vietnam. The filmmaker listens to stories, gathers fragments of memory, and searches for the traces that remain in the minds of those who lived through the war. Slowly, she comes to realize that she herself has forgotten, has been indifferent, has remained unaware of the pain of war and the sorrowful memories within her own family.
Through intimate encounters and lingering silences, the film explores what is lost when a country forgets — and what remains.
It asks: What does it mean to remember a war you never lived, but inherited?

50 Năm Quên theo chân Mai Huyền Chi - một nữ đạo diễn người Việt, trong hành trình đi tìm dấu vết về cuộc đời và cái chết của ông cô — một anh hùng huyền thoại thời chiến.
Từ một cuộc truy tìm mang tính cá nhân, bộ phim dần hé lộ những đối thoại sâu lắng với ký ức, nỗi đau, và những bóng đen đổ dài của chiến tranh.
Bộ phim là một hành trình rong ruổi khắp ba miền Việt Nam. Nhà làm phim lắng nghe nhiều câu chuyện, thu nhặt những mảnh kí ức, tìm kiếm những dấu vết còn lại trong tâm trí những người đã sống qua thời chiến. Và dần dần, cô phát hiện ra chính mình đã quên, đã thờ ơ, đã không biết tới những nỗi đau chiến tranh và những kí ức buồn ngay trong chính gia đình mình.
Thông qua những cuộc trò chuyện thân mật và những khoảng lặng kéo dài, bộ phim đặt ra câu hỏi:
Làm sao để nhớ một cuộc chiến mình chưa từng sống qua, nhưng đã mang trong máu?
//DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT//
I began this film thinking I was searching for my grandfather—for a name, a grave, a narrative. What I found instead was the vast terrain of forgetting that surrounds war, especially in the silence of those who survive it.
As I traveled across Vietnam, I met people who remembered vividly, people who had forgotten deliberately, and others who chose to wrap the past in silence. Slowly, I realized the war wasn’t just a historical past event—it was something still living in how families are shaped, fractured, or lost.
What shocked me most was learning that the very divide had split my own extended family I thought I was documenting. The discovery reshaped the film—and me.
50 Years of Forgetting is not a story about the past. It is a story about what lingers, what erodes, and what refuses to disappear.
